The Biblical call to missions is most clearly articulated in the Great Commission (Matthew 28:19-20) and in the Ascension Commission (Acts 1:8). These Scriptures promote a view of missions directed at church growth in three dimensions: (1) evangelistic proclamation leading to (2) multiplying Christian Congregations, and (3) building up the saints through the exercise of spiritual gifts. The primary goal of missions is to bring glory to Jesus Christ through the saving of souls from the eternal consequences of sin (Romans 10:1-15).
Based on these principles, Severn Run EPC prayerfully seeks to evangelize the unsaved, facilitate church planting, and make disciples of our Lord Jesus Christ of those who have been redeemed in His name by grace, beginning with the local community, then the rest of the state and U.S., and, finally, the world at large. Our church specifically promotes evangelism and discipleship among students at several local high schools and universities; through our military chaplains; and among the peoples of Nepal, Moldova, and North Africa; and supports church planting in Chesapeake Presbytery, the U.S., Japan, Europe and Bolivia. Our Lord has also commissioned His people to other tasks, particularly the ministry of mercy to a hurting world (Matthew. 25:31-46).
Accordingly, the missions program of Severn Run EPC also supports activities that are principally merciful in nature, focused on the poor in our community, in the Baltimore area, and in South Africa; to those hurting with crisis pregnancies and those seeking to become adoptive parents; to orphans and refugees around the globe; and to those devastated by natural disasters. Each year the church also sends a volunteer team to Fairmont, WV, in a united effort with other churches from around the country, to renovate homes and show the love of Christ to those living in poverty.
