| What is a Deacon? The Book of Church Order outlines the office of Deacons as one of sympathy and service after the example of our Lord Jesus. It is the duty of deacons to minister to those who are in need, to the sick, to the friendless, and to any who may be in distress. Deacons are to have the care of the property of the congregation and keep the church and other buildings in good repair. The deacons are under the direct supervision and authority of the session.
The office of deacon, which is spiritual in nature, should be filled with chosen men of spiritual character, of honest repute, who live exemplary lives, have a brotherly spirit, warm sympathies, and sound judgment. There are times when the session should select and appoint godly men and women of the congregation to assist the deacons in caring for the sick, the widows, the orphans, the prisoners, and others who may be in any distress or need. This is who we are and what we do. God has called us to serve our congregation and that is a calling we take to heart. Whether actively sitting or inactive, we are here to serve. It is a challenging calling and at times overwhelming; however, the feeling we get when we know God has used us to further His kingdom is wonderful.
If you feel God directing you to service with us, we would love to hear from you. Ask us how you can get involved and maybe one day be elected to the board of deacons. Even if you may not be eligible to become a deacon, there are ways to get involved. God can use you in ways you might not have thought possible. The service is great, but the rewards are greater. To God be the Glory.
